France- Following President Emmanuel Macron election, there were
high hopes in France that their economy would rise and prosper. According to
the French government, unemployment has gone down. The National Institute of
Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) has contradicted them. INSEE stated
that unemployment rose to 9.2% in the first quarter. Youth unemployment rate
decreased from 21.60 to 21.50. Chief Investment Officer, Lorne Baring, has said
that Europe has been affected all over, not just in France.
If the
unemployment rate keeps increasing, then it is going to keep damaging France’s
economy. Not being able to work also hurts the population. Either, people won’t
be able to maintain their standard of living, or the standard of living could
decrease. People will find ways to sustain their basic needs. For the youth
that are unemployed, they can’t pay for college. If they don’t have higher
education, then they aren’t able to have high paying jobs in the future. With
the information given in the article, France sounds like they are a middle-income
country. France is also trying to have a converging economy by providing new
policies.
There are protests right now in
France against President Emmanuel Macron’s decisions. President Macron has
planned to lay off 120,000 public jobs within five years. In my opinion, France
is still trying out the new policies to decrease unemployment. But, leaving
120,000 people jobless doesn’t seem like the best move. I can understand that the
President is trying to decrease the budget deficit. Both are huge issues that
need to be tackled. I believe their welfare program should be focused more on the
poor people and be more strict who can benefit from it. This way people who don’t
necessarily qualify for it don’t take advantage of it.
